Bugbears of the Frozen Tears

This is the latest TRIBES supplement from Raging Swan Press. This crew is tied with Rite Publishing as my third favorite Pathfinder publisher (after Paizo and OpenDesign). I don’t know that there’s anything there’ve put out so far that I haven’t found enjoyable or useful.

This supplement is about bugbears, my personal favorite humanoid race. I ran a 3.5 campaign where bugbears were a player character race in my world, and wrote up all sorts of background material for how their culture fit into the setting. I made them major players. That’s how much I like bugbears.

As with other TRIBES supplements, it starts with a setting in a nutshell, the background on a tribe, history, ecology, and how their lairs are organized. There are oddly specific color details, but it remains generic enough to drop wholesale into any setting. There are new feats, spells, and magic items, which of course were created for the bugbears to use against the player characters. There are pre-generated bugbear characters, and a new demon lord.  This also offers alternate racial features to make your bugbears stand out, an alternate Sorcerer bloodline that ties into the setting material, and a new cleric domain.

What I like about this PDF is that it’s all of 27 pages, just the right size. It doesn’t try to cram more information than you’d ever want, need, or read into a standard print book page length. They have collected the first several TRIBES supplements into an anthology, however, and I will likely pick up the print version for my bookshelf eventually.

About Berin Kinsman

Hello, I’m Berin. I am a freelance writer, putting down words on things as varied as short stories, screenplays, recipes, productivity advice, and tabletop games. Those are all things that I love, and I enjoy working with and promoting fellow bloggers, writers, editors, and publishers who share those interests. My other passion is working with groups that assist the poor and the homeless. This is my way of trying to be the change I’d like to see in the world, as well as paying it forward in honor of everyone who has ever helped me in large or small ways. I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico with my wife, the incredibly talented artist, crafter and educator Katie Kinsman, and our small army of cats.
