When Katie and I joined our new church home this past year, I told our senior pastor that we were there to serve, and that we picked this church because of the many opportunities for service and outreach that are available. I am not and have never been a “Sunday Christian”. To me, what happens in the pews on Sunday morning isn’t as important as the works, the faith in action, that happens the rest of the week. Jesus told us to love our neighbor, to feed his sheep, and that how we treat the least among us is how we’re treating him.
When I first started back into ministry a few months ago, I was throwing mud against the wall to see what stuck. I had time and motivation and volunteered for nearly every opportunity that came up. It gave me the opportunity to sample a range of different ministries within my local church, to meet many people, and to view the wide range of opportunities to serve that exist.
However, I’ve now reached a point in my personal ministry that I need to locate the theme, the through line, that unifies and clarifies my call. Going in 85 different directions isn’t necessarily the best use of my talents, the most effective way to serve. I’ve considered seeking out a spiritual director, someone who could help me find tie together my various ministry efforts as well as all of the myriad facets of my life. While I’m mulling that over, and seeking potential people who would be Laity site.
Are You Answering the Call to Daily Mission?
It’s a seven-page PDF document that has a number of questions to ask yourself and pray over. It seems like a lot to digest all at once, so I’m going to try to digest it slowly and take my time thinking about my answers. I’ll use the questions as the basis for some posts over the coming weeks, to share my the process with you. All feedback, as always, is welcome.
