As usual, The Unspeakable Oath offers up bits and pieces of advice for an Cthulhu-based gaming experience. We start with Shane Ivey ruminating on the proper place of combat in Call of Cthulhu, acknowledging that system’s roots in RuneQuest.
“A Tale of Terror: The Plot Thickens” offers up ideas on how to use the end of an adventure as the start of a new story. There are always loose ends, aren’t there?
“She Just Couldn’t Stay Away” is a beautifully trippy scenario involving an old woman and her beloved cat. Picture the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day as a Mythos film, and you’ll get there. There’s something to be said for adventures that are sweet and semtimental while still being creepy and disturbing.
There’s a very long and comprehensive article on the historical Assassins and how they fit with the Mythos. Well-researched, with information than can be used in any time period.
“Let’s Learn Aklo!” is Delta Green scenario, and the winner of the scenario contest on the DG mailing list. I noticed at least one similarity with “She Just Couldn’t Stay Away” (time displacement). Although the two scenarios have nothing to do with one another, I have wicked thoughts of running them one after another, to confuse players who will try to draw connections that don’t exist outside of coincidence.
Adam Scott Glancy talks about what canon means in roleplaying games. He also drops that there’s a new Delta Green book coming, coving what’s happened in the DG-verse between 9/11 and the death of bin Laden. That will prove interesting.
There’s other stuff, but this is the meat of the issue for me. Well worth the cover price if you like modern-era stuff and Delta Green. If you play in any other period, you might be disappointed.
