Systems Normal, All Fouled Up

Two weeks on the road and working from whatever free wifi points I could find have seriously messed up my work schedule. I figured I’d get back into my old routines and get caught up once we got home, but internet in the studio is down until Friday. So I’m back to working from coffee shops for the next couple of days, trying to get caught up, focusing primarily on school assignments and deadlined writing jobs. Blogging and other project work will be sparse.

With luck, I will be back in full swing next Tuesday, following the long Independence Day weekend.

About Berin Kinsman

Hello, I’m Berin. I am a freelance writer, putting down words on things as varied as short stories, screenplays, recipes, productivity advice, and tabletop games. Those are all things that I love, and I enjoy working with and promoting fellow bloggers, writers, editors, and publishers who share those interests. My other passion is working with groups that assist the poor and the homeless. This is my way of trying to be the change I’d like to see in the world, as well as paying it forward in honor of everyone who has ever helped me in large or small ways. I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico with my wife, the incredibly talented artist, crafter and educator Katie Kinsman, and our small army of cats.

  1. Weird question: When you’re working from coffee shops, how long to you spend in any one shop, and what’s a good consumption rate while you’re there? I mean, the store is there to make money from paying customers, and (having spent time on the other side of the counter) I’d hate to feel as if I were taking up space without giving the shop (especially if it’s an independent shop) good custom for it.

  2. Good question, Lon. I’ve spoken to baristas about what they think is acceptable and what simply pisses them off, and the unofficial, unscientific seems to be about 2 hours per purchase depending upon how busy the place is. That’s the guideline I use.

Right now I’m in a coffee shop, and there are two other coffee shops on the same block. I have a large coffee in front of me, so I’ll be here a couple of hours. At that point I will either buy something else, or move up the street to another shop and buy something there. Whether I stay or go depends on how deeply I am into what I’m working on (a school paper, as soon as I’m done answering email and post comments), how much I need to get up and move around, and how crowded the shop is. Right now the place is busy, but it’s mostly foot traffic buying stuff to go. About half the tables are empty. If in two hours’ time the place is packed, I will wander up the street.

The only reason I picked this block of coffee shops over the library today is access to food. While the main library has a coffee shop in it that serves food, the food isn’t very good for what they charge. One of the indie coffee shops on this block serves good food at reasonable prices, and there’s also a fast food joint that serves edible food extremely cheap.
