On March 11th, 2011, at 1:45 p.m., Katie ceased to be my girlfriend and became my wife and partner.
We’ve planned this for a while, but played our cards very close to the vest. Apologies to everyone for that. She has a large family and a broad circle of friends, and I have a large family of friends. It wasn’t going to be possible to invite everyone. The only way to avoid offending anyone was to pretty much just offend everyone. We’re of a certain age where pomp and circumstances aren’t appealing to us; we wanted a small, private ceremony. We want the focus to be on having a marriage that lasts a lifetime, not a party that lasts a day. It was a simple ceremony in the magistrate’s office, with a couple of “couple friends” who were instrumental in bringing us together as witnesses.
Katie and I met in late 2009, when I first moved back to Albuquerque. We became gaming buddies. We discovered that we have many mutual interests, including art and music, and overlapping tastes. When we began dating we kept it very quiet as well, because we didn’t want any pressure one way or another from mutual friends, and didn’t reveal that we were seeing each other until we were certain the relationship was going somewhere. We’ve spent a lot of time roaming museums and art galleries, watching science and history shows on PBS, and watching Doctor Who and bad movies. We’re both avid gamers, of course, currently playing together in no less than five tabletop roleplaying game campaigns. If you’re interested in buying us a gift, we’d be happy with any of the games on my Amazon wishlist.
For those of you who haven’t met Katie yet, she’s from Indiana, she’s an elementary school teacher, and a very talented illustrator, jeweler and dollmaker. If you’re one of Katie’s friends just tuning in to this site for the first time, I’m a writer, game designer, freelance clergyman and third-string superhero.
We’re spending our honeymoon here in New Mexico, playing tourists in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, seeing local sites including the zoo, the aquarium, the botanical garden, and a lot of museums.
For those of you that are local, we are planning to throw a get-together in the near future. It will likely take the form of a day-long “wedding con”, filled with board games and food.
Congratulations! I am somehow completely unsurprised.
