Random Notes on the Holiday

I survived Shopocalypse 2010. I’m off today, Christmas Eve, and I’m not going near a retail store. I’m exhausted, but work life starts to normalize again and I get to spend a three day weekend with my family of friends.

The ex-wife contacted me to tell me she was putting Bitsy the Hamster Dog, my faithful sidekick and companion, to sleep yesterday. Bitsy (whose preferred to be called by her full name, Princess Consuela the Petite and Delicious Wonder Biscuit) was 15 or 16 years old, mostly blind, and having problems just toddling around. She wasn’t in the best of health a year ago. I’d already said my goodbyes and made my peace that I’d lost my dogs during the divorce. Still, some friends have expressed some opinions about her timing that I’m not adverse to sharing.

And speaking of the ex, we used to have a tradition that on December 24th we’d go to dinner at a certain chain restaurant. After moving to Burque, I discovered a group of friends who also had a tradition of going to the same chain restaurant on Christmas Eve. So I get to keep the tradition and change the meaning. Which is good, because I actually like the food at this place. I’m takin’ it back, yo.

Anyhow…

Katie is in Indiana with her family. We’ve spent a lot of time talking, but I miss her. I’ll get to see her for New Year’s Eve. Best possible way to start the new year.

Today I’m having breakfast with a friend, lunch with another friend, going to the Natural History Museum, then, of course, dinner. Tomorrow I’m going to spend Christmas with friends, watching movies. Will probably see Rare Exports, True Grit, Tron: Legacy, among others. A fun weekend with my family of friends.

Life is good, people. Life is good. Happy merry to all of you, and all that.

About Berin Kinsman

Hello, I’m Berin. I am a freelance writer, putting down words on things as varied as short stories, screenplays, recipes, productivity advice, and tabletop games. Those are all things that I love, and I enjoy working with and promoting fellow bloggers, writers, editors, and publishers who share those interests. My other passion is working with groups that assist the poor and the homeless. This is my way of trying to be the change I’d like to see in the world, as well as paying it forward in honor of everyone who has ever helped me in large or small ways. I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico with my wife, the incredibly talented artist, crafter and educator Katie Kinsman, and our small army of cats.
