Went to the Destroy All Movies tour tonight. Saw Valley Girl, which was hilarious largely because it’s so dated. As viewed from 2010, idea of Nicolas Cage as a hunky leading man is ludicrously hysterical. Got to hang with a friend that I’ve never gotten to spend time with one-on-one, which was awesome.
And I got to see one of my favorite cult movies, Times Square. Actually, I got to see, on the big screen, the only known 35mm print of the film in existence. That factoid takes my breath away. It’s a film I’ve never seen on the big screen; a friend taped it off cable when I was in high school, and we watched it like a billion times. I owned the soundtrack on cassette tape and wore it out. As I watched, I realized the impact the film had, and continues to have, on me. It’s where I was instilled with a punk ethos. It’s where I developed romanticized notions of street people and urban areas, and where I developed my love for strangebeautiful streetmutants. It’s an uneven film with great performances and a bizarre and rather sad history to it.
