Even though it’s a way off, I’ve started getting invitations for Thanksgiving. I love my family of friends, and that they think of me. My original plan was to spend the day in fasting and prayer, but I can’t turn down spending it in fellowship and love.
So what I’m going to do, and what I’d like to invite others to do, is spend Black Friday fasting intelligently. Don’t harm yourself, if you’ve never fasted before and don’t know how. The day represents raw consumerism and the indulgence of stuff, so I can’t think of a better time to do it. There is so much need in the world, so much hunger and poverty, but also so much debt, so much enslavement to materialism. Fast not to deprive yourself, or as a form of protest. Fast to think of those things, to be mindful of why we do what we do and buy what we buy, how money impacts our lives and the lives of others.
I’ll post more on this, including information on how to fast safely, as the day approaches. I just wanted to plant this seed now, so you have time to think about it.
