Media: April 26, 2009

There is a huge connection between the media I consume and my mood. I’ve always said, when you’re dealing with an escapist you have to look not only what they’re escaping to but what they’re escaping from. Economic collapse, bird flu, mass murder, reality shows, no thank you. I’m starting to track what I read/watch/listen to, including news and radio, on my daily planner, and seeing how that compares with the mood meter at the start and end of the day.

Currently Reading: Hellfrost, a Savage Worlds fantasy setting written by Paul “Wiggy” Wade Williams and edited by my friend Ron Blessing. I’ve read a lot of great games and settings recently, but this scores the total win. It’s kind of Song of Ice and Fire meets a D&D world, but that does not really do it justice. Very original setting, beautifully written.

On my nightstand, waiting to be started, are Chris Roberson’s Set the Seas on Fire, which is sort of a Patrick O’Brien-meets-Cthulhu novel, and Robert E. Howard’s Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, which I’m itching to re-read even though I just read it recently. From the corner, a stack of Steven Brust novels are eyeballing me, as well as Martin’s A Storm of Swords. I am not at a loss for great reads.

Currently Watching: The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, and the Salkind Three Musketeers/Four Musketeers are in my “to watch” queue this week. Swashbuckling and seafaring stuff puts me in a good mood, in case you haven’t sensed a theme here. Assuming I actually get through all of those in the coming week (ha!), I may follow them up with Kingdom of Heaven (hey, its got flaws but I like it) and the A&E Hornblower series.

I’m suddenly realizing that I don’t own any Errol Flynn movies. The Adventures of Robin Hood was my favorite film as a kid. How is it I don’t own it? Or The Sea Hawk. Michael Curtiz was a god among film makers.

Currently Listening: The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks, and the Master and Commander soundtrack. Oh, and the Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack. Hmm, I don’t have any Erich Wolfgang Korngold films scores, either. What’s wrong with me? Must rectify this situation if I ever have disposable income again.
